Summer, 1933. In a Jewish village on the Polish-Russian border, it is the eve of the Sabbath. Abraham, the nine-year-old son of a deeply religious family, longs to break out. His only friend is Ivan, a young Polish apprentice, but Ivan is about to be fired. When tongues start wagging and Abraham's grandfather is victimized by the dirt-poor local Polish peasants, the two boys run away together to see the world. On their travels they meet Gypsies, farmers and the man with the horses...
