The Great Charles
Photo: B. Barbereau - France 2
August, 1944. A triumphant Charles de Gaulle walks down the Champs-Élysées to the cheers of liberated Paris. Yet in a few short months France's wartime unity will break apart with partisan bickering, and de Gaulle will exhaust himself playing the political games he hated so much. Two years later, he resigns suddenly, hoping to provide an invigorating shock to the country and rally the French. But he’s wrong. The 4th Republic gains momentum, the country recovers, the memory of war dims.
In a period known as his crossing of the desert, a disillusioned de Gaulle will spend twelve years in solitude, his hopes shattered. Luckily his days are busy writing his memoirs. Recalling the challenges of wartime, his encounters with Churchill and Roosevelt…will this compensate for the mediocrity of his current adversaries? Will some unforeseeable event bring him back to lead his beloved country once again?
