When news hit on March 24th, 2015 that a Germanwings Airbus A320 had crashed in the French Alps, no one could have guessed the cause. The co-pilot, 28-yr-old Andreas Lubitz, had deliberately flown the plane into the side of a mountain to kill himself and the other 149 people on board. It was a terrifying act that triggered questions about the safety of air travel and the reliability of pilot testing.
We look for answers to these questions while examining efforts to reduce the risks of human error, and ultimately ask—do planes need pilots?
