Sinan the Magnificent

1x26'

Photo: DR

Mimar Sinan was one of history’s greatest yet least known architects. As court architect to Ottoman emperor Suleiman the Magnificent, his creations stand to this day in Istanbul and throughout Turkey – some 400 extraordinary edifices in all. He has been compared to his Italian contemporary, Michelangelo, but remains virtually unknown in the West. When the Ottomans laid claim to Constantinople, it fell to Sinan – himself a convert to Islam – to transform the great Hagia Sophia cathedral into a mosque.
